Understanding the 5 Sacred Limbs of Hindu Panchang
The word Panchang is derived from Sanskrit: Pancha (five) and Anga (limbs). In Sanatan Dharma, any auspicious ceremony (Muhurat) is chosen when the 5 planetary energies harmonize with your family’s birth nakshatra.
1. Tithi & 2. Nakshatra
Tithi measures the angular elongation between the Sun and Moon (12° per tithi), determining spiritual energy. Nakshatras represent the 27 lunar constellations that channel cosmic vibrations into human consciousness.
3. Yoga & 4. Karana
Yoga indicates the combined longitudinal velocity of the Sun and Moon, signifying harmony or friction. Karana is half a tithi, dictating whether immediate physical action or patient restraint is recommended.
5. Vaar & Muhurats
The day of the week is governed by its planetary lord (Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani). Each day contains 30 Muhurtas, with Abhijit Muhurat universally celebrated as the most auspicious window for new endeavors.
